Doubleday Babcock Senior Center is a multi-purpose
community based Center that offers a variety of programs to the
senior community.
Founded in 1976, the Center served its first lunch in the
Parish Hall of Christ Episcopal Church, which stands a few doors
down from its current location. From its inception, the Center
has been non-denominational and makes no distinctions of race,
color or creed. As DBSC's membership continued to increase, it
became apparent that the needs of the senior population also
continued to increase. The need for more space was clear. As
a result, a capital fund drive was organized in 1996 culminating
with the purchase and renovation of the present Center, located
at 45 East Main Street, Oyster Bay, NY.
The Center serves the senior residents of Oyster Bay and its
surrounding vicinities (Oyster Bay, Locust Valley, Bayville,
East Norwich). Programs planned at the Center are determined
and organized by the staff and members. A Council is elected
by the members and works with the staff to identify the desires
and needs of the senior members.
The extraordinary advances in science and medicine has made
it clear that people are living longer, healthier and more productive
lives, therefore, the needs of seniors are rapidly changing.
The vision once held of yester-year's senior citizen as people
who have simply "become old" and no longer desire to
participate in social and physical activities is long gone. The
culture of today's mature adults is quite different than twenty
or thirty years ago. Today, senior's lives' include exercise,
eating healthy, communicating via internet, volunteering, dancing,
singing, and maintaining an active lifestyle. The desire to continue
to meet new people is ever-present. You may have heard it said
that forty is the new thirty
..well, sixty is the new fifty.
This is the philosophy at DBSC. We understand the needs of seniors
and are moving forward with them. |
