DAYBREAK
May 2008 "An Oldie Vies for Nutrient of the Year" The so called sunshine vitamin is poised to become the nutrient of the decade. Can you guess which vitamin it is? If you said vitamin D, youre correct!
Recent findings state the long-standing set requirements may not be adequate. New findings suggest people do not receive enough vitamin D to reap its wonderful benefits.
New findings suggest vitamin D can help sufferers of osteoporosis and joint pain. It can slow the effects of arthritis and lessen back pain. Certain studies suggest it may also help prevent certain types of cancer.Researchers suggest one hour of sunshine exposure can help your body to produce more vitamin D. As we age, we produce less of the vitamin.
Monitor diets, drink fortified milk, eat more fish and take supplements. Discuss with your doctor whether or not you require a supplement. You could live life more painlessly!
Remember To Let the SUNSHINE In!
Sincerely,
Adrienne

Program Coordinator
This program was established in 1999 and is dedicated to providing high-quality, affordable, therapeutic services to functionally impaired older adults in a social day-care environment. We offer mind-stimulating activities to the frail and elderly senior who needs assurance and assistance. Several activities are planned each day to encourage the member to interact with others. Some of the stimulating activities include discussions, games, arts and crafts and intergenerational activities. Exercise such as tai chi, yoga and strength training as well as active games that build stronger bones and improve balance and coordination have also been incorporated into the program. Music and laughter continually fill the room creating a cheerful environment. With gentle encouragement, our goal is to nurture lost confidence to the senior who is facing physical and mental challenges and to help them live life as fully as possible. A registered nurse visits the Program weekly to conduct blood pressure screenings and answer general medical questions. In addition, a balanced and nutritious lunch and snack is provided during the day. DBSC employs a Licensed Social Worker (LMSW) who is also a Geriatric Care Manager and is available five days per week. She offers extensive social service assistance to residents who come to the Center directly or are referred by other agencies.Another very important dynamic this program offers is, it serves as a respite to the caregivers of elderly parents or family members who need special attention. It enables the caregiver to have some time of their own, and have peace of mind, knowing that their loved one is in good and capable hands. The ratio of caretakers to senior member is 1-3. Currently, the program is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
