Volunteerism can be described as the willingness of people
to work on behalf of others without the expectation of pay or
other tangible gain. The majority of volunteer work is usually
done on an impromptu basis, recognizing a need and filling that
need. At Doubleday Babcock Senior Center, we depend on volunteers
to help us make our center what it is today and what it will
be in the future. We anticipate great growth, not only within
our membership, but growth within the Center for plans yet to
come. In order to achieve our dreams, we must have people who
care, our volunteers.
Doubleday Babcock Senior Center acknowledged some very
important volunteers last Tuesday in honor of Volunteer Recognition
Day! The annual celebration is always a joyous one, however,
it's also a challenge for DBSC members and staff because, the
fact is, our center is blessed with so many extraordinary volunteer
members making it extremely difficult to select only a few to
receive the award. This year, there were ten nominees, each
possessing extraordinary volunteer qualities and altruistic intents.
The winners, selected by DBSC members, were Joe Ruggiero and
Margaret Beckett. The winner, selected by DBSC staff was Elaine
Sarin. All three members have dedicated their time freely to
the Center, assisting with fundraising events, "hands on
work" such as mailings, cooking, carrying, lifting, entertaining
and assisting by driving seniors to appointments, to name just
a few "well done volunteer jobs". Congratulations,
Margaret, Joe and Elaine. We value your good work and your presence
at DBSC. It is people like you who bring meaning to the word
"community."
The day was lots of fun; everyone enjoyed a lovely lunch
and terrific music provided by Georgie Maseli. Executive Director,
Gail Speranza presented all three winners with inscribed plaques
and Ralph Caruso, Deputy Commissioner, Department of Senior Citizen
Affairs, James Stefanich, TOBAY, Receiver of Taxes, and Rose
Walker, TOBAY Councilwoman all spoke about the importance of
volunteering and thanked everyone for their efforts.
Another very special day at DBSC will be May 8th when we
celebrate "Mother's Day." We are planning a lovely
afternoon including a fashion show entitled "Fashions Throughout
the Ages." Brunch will be served at 11 AM, show will begin
at 12:30 and a lovely tea party including the traditional delectable
desserts will begin at 1:30. Reservations are required, so call
the office!
Speaking of sweets, Pat Marone, Chef from the Regency in
Glen Cove, stopped by to present a cooking demo for our members
on April 17th. He prepared a "light dessert" - Banana
and Strawberry Flambé. Oh boy, was it good - fancy too!
I hear he left the recipe at the Center, so, if you're ambitious
And remember - "We don't stop playing because we've
grown old, we grow old because we've stopped playing."
